Michael Ruhlman has written for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Gourmet and Food Arts magazines. Among his many books, there are several on food and cooking. The Making of a Chef was written out of his experiences at The Culinary Institute of America, The Soul of a Chef was his perspective in the Certified Master Chef exam and three top chefs who took it. The Reach of a Chef is due out in May of 2006. Michael Ruhlman has also observed pediatric surgical unit which he brings to life in Walk On Water: Inside an Elite Pediatric Surgical Unit. Ruhlman observes that highly stressful work environments (such as those experienced by both Chefs and Surgeons) change a person fundamentally. In addition to being an author, Ruhlman was the host for the popular PBS show Cooking Under Fire.
